Why Give

The Bible has a lot to say about giving. In fact, giving is so important that it is talked about more than almost any other topic in God’s Word. It is fundamentally an act of worship to God. It’s one of the ways we express our great love for what God is doing in our life.

Giving is an integral part of our relationship with God:

•    It acknowledges God as the provider, supplier of everything we have.
•    It reflects our trust that He will continue to provide for us.
•    It shows us how to be a part of His work here on Earth.
•    It is a way for us to follow through on what He commands us to do. In the Bible, God tells us to,

"Honor God with everything you own; give him the first and the best." (Proverbs 3:9 MSG)

The Bible teaches that our baseline standard for giving is the tithe -- contributing 10% of our income to the local church. At Journey Church, we have learned that tithing has been a turning point for many people to experience the blessings of following Jesus.

Why do we tithe?

•    The purpose of tithing is to teach you to always put God first in your life.
•    Tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything you have. (Deuteronomy 14:23 TLB)
•    It is also God’s personal invitation to an outpouring of His blessings in your life.

"Tithe" is derived from the Hebrew word ma’aser and it literally means “a tenth”. Therefore, ten percent of everything belongs to the Lord.  In Malachi 3:10 (NLT), God says this: “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” This is the only place in Scripture where God tells us to put Him to the test. In other words, He’s saying, “Go ahead. I dare you. See if you can out give me.”

The tithe is to be given to your home church -- the place where you are being spiritually fed (the storehouse (as referenced above in Mal. 3:10). When God stirs you to give beyond your tithe, it is referred to as an offering. You can direct your offering to the cause that resonates with you.

Is God wise? Do you trust Him? These are two fundamental questions behind the act of giving. If God is wise, then you should obey to what He says about financial stewardship. If you trust Him, then you should rely on Him in all aspects of your life, including your finances. Accept God’s challenge to put Him to the test. Start tithing faithfully and watch what He does in and through your life.?

Tips on Consistent Giving

Most people desire to stay faithful in their tithes and their offerings but sometimes we get distracted by the busyness of life. Here are some tips we have learned to stay consistent in giving.

1)    Whenever you get receive funds from work, make it a priority to write a tithe check to your local church. This is the principle of First Fruits found in the Bible (Matt. 13:30). Which talks about giving God our first and the best of our offering.

2) Automate your giving through your ban.  If you use online banking you can go to your bank’s website and find to the “Bill Pay” area and set up an automatic payment to Journey Church, 5000 US Highway 17, Suite 18 #95, Orange Park, FL 32003. You can time the automatic payment to occur at any time you would like each month. By doing this, your bank will automatically mail the donation to the church on your behalf.

3) Use the church’s “Give” button located on the upper right of the homepage of  http://www.journeychurch.org. This is a great way to stay consistent in your giving. Maybe you miss church, are out of town, or simply prefer to manually make a tithe donation electronically vs physically using a printed check.

Make consistent giving an essential ingredient to your walk with God. Putting God first in your finances is a sign of maturity in the faith. It reminds us that God is the owner of all we have and we are merely stewards of the resources He entrusts to us.
